tale of two sisters 2When I first heard the movie A Tale of Two Sisters, Of course, the first question came to my mind is what could be the story of the two sisters. Interestingly I watched the movie to find out whatever possible tale that is. Viewing this movie when everybody is asleep will definitely give you a second thought not to finish it (so better asked others to watch with you). With its set-up, in a tranquil lakeside there is the literal dark house, I’m sure you would be so much watchful that you would think of every possible manifestation of ghoul to every corner of the house. Plus you would never stand with the silent scenes that you would not feel creepy.

What I really like about Asian horror films is that stories are always surprising. When you realize a possible conclusion you’ll be surprise that in the end of the movie it’s another way around. Just like what we have here in A Tale of Two Sisters. At first I thought the movie marks an evil step-mom. Then after I realized more possible hints in the story I therefore conclude that there was a possible murder in the past. Next thing I knew the step mother might have a history of mental illness and that the two sisters are at risk.
Finally in the last 30 minutes of the story the revelation was open. As I mentioned early, I was wrong with my conclusion. Although I’m a bit near with my suspicions I wasn’t expecting the outcome. Not realizing that it is another Asian horror film that made a trick. Much better than being right until the end, saying “I already thought that would happen”.

By that I wanted to see the movie all over again so that I could understand better the foreshadowing done in the story. I had to admit Kim Jee-woon had a nice concept in directing the film. All of the back-up shots were suitable to the revelation part. Also how he formulated the scenes and shots to the parts of the house were very good.

The Plot

A supernatural horror film from Kim Jee-woon is inspired by the ancient Korean folktale Jangha and Hongryun. In a detached lakeside house two sisters, Su-mi (Lim Su-jung) and Su-yeon (Mun Geun-yeong), came back home from hospitalization. While their father Mu-Hyun (Kim Gab-su) just so after his first wife’s death married another woman named Eun-joo (Yeom Jeong-ah). The girls obviously hate their step- mom. Strange and ghoul visions begin to disturb Su-mi and she becomes convinced that Eun-joo is keeping a dark secret from them and to their father. The family problem comes worse while their father seems to ignore the problem. More strange things start to happen at the grand old house and to this small family, not realizing that it is because of one’s own actions.
