Even before it is shown on theaters in Taiwan, the Doze Niu helmed Taiwanese thriller film, “Monga”, is now receiving controversial attention. In a movie where gang violence and street fights are a dime a dozen, local officials are up in arms against the early teaser trailers of the movie. They are objecting to the negative image the trailers are giving to the ancient Taipei district of Monga due to the scenes portraying gangster violence and scenes in a brothel. In the end the controversy may prove to perk up the box office sales for the movie. The cast of the movie include Ethan Ruan (Juan Ching-tien) and Mark Chao You-ting.
The movie’s plot tells a story of five boys who join a gang because they were tired of being bullied around. As the young boys enjoy their newfound status as gangsters in Monga, they have no idea that other gangs have also set their eyes on the prosperous area. Under the guidance of a veteran gangster, the youngsters are taught the heritage created by the founders of the Monga. He has no idea, however, of a storm brewing that will soon break every hint of order and remove the last remaining grandeur of the Old Town Monga. The storm that will be brought by a rival gang which is amassing weapons to transform the world that he and the Prince Gang are currently living in. Doze Niu not only directs the movie but he was also the writer for this action thriller that is scheduled to be released on February 5.
