Coming SoonWhat would you do if the movie you were watching suddenly comes to life, kills the people around you one by one, and finally turns to killing you in the end?

That’s the exact premise the movie Coming Soon, released in 2008, works around. What makes this horror movie a bit scarier than the others is that even horror films can come to life and attack the people who are watching. Not long after, even I asked myself: what if the same thing happens to me while I’m watching this movie? Will the characters of Coming Soon kill me too?

The Plot

Chen (Chantavit Danasevi) and Som (Vorakarn Rojjanavatchra) just broke up, no thanks to the Chen’s drug dependency. His addiction has become so uncontrollable that he has begun to steal Som’s things just to buy drugs. Som has finally had enough and decided to leave Chen once and for all.

This massive blow to Chen prompts him to finally get his act together and start undoing the sins of his past. This includes getting enough money to pawn back the wrist watch he stole from Som. Together with Peoll, who with Chen works as projectionists in the theater, they decide to enter the piracy industry. Their first foray into piracy was to film a horror movie that has yet to be shown. Chen leaves Peoll to do the videotaping of the film, while he goes back to the projection room.

Chen inconveniently falls asleep and upon waking up, he looks for Peoll. He only finds the camera, and when he tries calling Peoll, a chilling image appeared on the screen: that of Peoll’s body, with his cellphone ringing on the screen—the cellphone Chen is calling!

The death of Peoll makes Chen want to give up, but it’s unfortunately too late. He has to finish this task, or the piracy dealer will get them in trouble. Helpless, Chen enlists the help of Som, who still cares for him deeply. Together, they investigate the story behind the horror film. Apparently, it was based on real life. Even worse, the suicidal woman in the film haunts the watchers who get to see her commit suicide in the silver screen! By the time the pair realize this, the suicidal woman is already out to get them.

A Solid Plot with Enough Scare Factor

With the rise of Asian horror films, standing out among the lot is definitely a challenge. Coming Soon is able to do this with the story’s unique take of horror films. In fact, this horror film’s moral is to be careful about watching horror films, as they can be dangerous—even deadly.

More than being interesting, the movie’s scare factor is also enough to give viewers a few shivers. I for one couldn’t help but crawl under the sheets with a few of the film’s terrifying scenes.

Its director, Sopon Sukdapisit, knows all too well how to give people a good scare, having co-written some of the best Thai horror films Shutter and Alone. More than just being scary, it is also set in a realistic setting. Piracy as well know is prevalent in Asian countries—and Coming Soon makes this a valid premise for its story. Overall, this was a horror movie done well.

Bodyguard and assassinsThe first two trailers of the Bodyguards and Assassins have just been released. One of these trailers have actually been released at Cannes as a promotional footage for this period film that aims to relive the assassination attempt of Sun Yat-sen in Hong Kong back in 1905.

What makes this film must-watch is the amazing detail it puts to real events that happened in the life of Sun Yat-Sen, a revolutionary who lived from 1866 to 1925. A group of bodyguard volunteers come together to protect the revolutionary from assassination attempts, each of which is shown in the film with a lot of bloody action.

Produced by the director of The Warlords Peter Chan, this film directed by Stephen Tung Wei will surely be another hit in Hong Kong and other Asian countries. This early, the film is already scouting for support in order to be featured in the Cannes Film Festival.

It also boasts an all-star film cast, with the following actors and actresses: Donnie Yen, Hu Jun, Fan Bing Bing, Nicolas Tse, Tong Leing Kar Fair, Cung Le , Philip Ng, Xing Yu,  and Wang Wen Jie. Michelle Reis is reported to have a cameo appearance in the film, also.

In Asian action films, it is rare for criminals to be portrayed as the main characters of the story. Usually, the main characters are the poor but skillful ones who get to smash the rich and powerful enemies in the end. Well, the story of Plastic City is the exact opposite of that.

Released in 2008, this movie was directed byYu Lik-wai. It had the two of the most top-billed actors in China: Joe Ogadari and Antonio Petrin. Taina Muller, Milhem Cortaz, and Anthony Wong also star in this film action-thriller Asian film.

This movie shows criminals as the main characters of the film—and takes its viewers to an exploration of the human’s negative side. That is evident from the film’s start: Yuda (Anthony Wong) is the leader of his crime gang. Along with him is Kirin (Odagiri Joe), whom he adopted. They are in charge of exporting and importing pirated goods and have substantial influence in the area they work in. So much, in fact, that they command respect in the places where they operate.

The luck of the pair, however, turns around when Yuda is imprisoned and rival gangs crash in on their business. Not only is Kirin left alone to tend to their criminal activities, he also has to compete with the Sao Paulo mafia. On the other hand, Yuda has to fight for his life inside prison while Kirin tries to raise heaven and hell just to free his foster father.

This intriguing and action-filled setting has lured audiences throughout the world. The superb acting of Wong and Kirin, paired with the suspenseful turns of the plot, has made this movie a must-watch for fans of action films. Now that it has been released in Hong Kong DVD, viewers can expect to get more out of this exciting film! The Japanese version of this DVD is slated for release on September.

Yoga SchoolEverywhere around the world, yoga is treated as a way to improve one’s overall lifestyle. Not only can it get a woman the body she desires, it can also improve her mental and emotional state. Relative to all the other forms of exercise, yoga is one of the more glorified and exalted ones.

That’s exactly the assumption that Yoga School challenges. The plot revolves around seven characters, all of whom are women seeking a cure for their respective insecurities. These four women have the most interesting problems. One is a career woman determined to outshine everybody in the workplace, including a newcomer. Another is a former actress who is now planning to make a big comeback. The third woman is someone who just underwent a bad plastic surgery and an even worse marriage. The last one is a girl trying to come to terms with her obesity issues. They are lured to the Yoga School, a place that promises absolute beauty once finished.

They soon realize that they are in the wildest and deadliest encounters of their lives, as the school turns out to be one horrific place. Unfortunately, they agreed to be trapped in it for seven days and be cut off from communication to the outside world.

The film, which will be shown in Korea this August, is one of the exciting horror films that you should watch for. Yoon Jae-yeon, the same person who directed the Wishing Stairs, is the director of this film. The stars of Yoga School include Eugene, Park Han-byul, Jo-Eun-ji, Cha Soo-yeon, Kim Hye-na, Lee Young-jin, and Hwang Seung-eon.

Last June 2, there was a press conference held for the film in Kyeonggi Province. It featured the stars doing a yoga session. Indeed, it was a great way to whet our appetite for this film’s upcoming release.
