Way back in January, Sony Pictures surprisingly picked up U.S. Theatrical rights for Shinjuku Incident and it was shown in about 20 screen with large Asian communities. Sony is now preparing a DVD release which is slated for May 25, 2010.
Starring well known actor Jackie Chan, the movie is an action-drama directed by former film and TV star Derek Yee. Chan plays an illegal immigrant in the streets of Tokyo who becomes involved with organized crime in order to survive the place called Shinjuku. The film was released in April 2009 in Hong Kong, but the movie was not released in most part of China. There have been contradicting report as what is the reason to it not being screened in the mainland, due to its significant amount of violence director Yee decided not to release it there. Other states that the reason is because of a non existing film classification system, China declared it is too bloody for public viewing.
The film also stars Daniel Wu, Xu Jinglei, and Naoto Takenaka who played a role in 2003 Japanese hit movie Azumi and also directed horror comedy Yamagata Scream in 2009. It was also nominated for Best Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Action Choreography at the 29th Hong Kong Film Awards which will be held April 18, 2010.
